What Politecnico di Milano is all about
Innovating since 1863
The Politecnico di Milano is one of the most outstanding technical Universities in Europe. Founded in 1863, it is the largest school of architecture, design and engineering in Italy, with three main campuses located in Milan, the heart of fashion and design industries and the future venue of Expo 2015, and five more premises around the Lombardy region.
Many important scientists and architects studied and taught here, among them Renzo Piano, Achille Castiglioni, Gio Ponti and Giulio Natta, Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963.
Training professionals
The Politecnico di Milano offers innovative programmes at all levels, within 6 schools of engineering, 2 schools of architecture and 1 school of design. Thanks to a strong internationalization policy, many programmes are taught entirely in English, attracting an ever-increasing number of talented foreign students, which now form a diverse community of about 3400 people coming from more than 100 different countries, out of 38.000 students overall.
Inter and multidisciplinarity is fostered throughout the academic path, and it is the methodological approach of the Phd School and the ASP (Alta Scuola Politecnica), a school for young talents from all over the world, who develop their skills in a team work context to pursue complex innovation projects.
Students are offered also focused and personalized career services, from in-class and online meetings with companies, to workshops on soft skills and the job market, along with announcements and guidance for international careers.
Engaging technological progress
Teaching is increasingly related to research, a key commitment that enables to achieve results of high international standards, while creating connections with the business world. In fact, being confronted with the needs of manufacturing and industrial sectors helps both teaching and research to approach new perspectives in order to manage constant and rapid change in a global context. Technology transfer and patenting are the assets of this dynamic relationship.
Strategic research is carried out mainly in the fields of energy, transport, planning, management, design, mathematics and natural and applied sciences, ICT, built environment, cultural heritage, with more than 130 laboratories, among these also a Wind Tunnel and a Crash Test centre.
According to a Peer Review performed in 2007, a research assessment by international evaluation panels, 40% of the Faculty belongs to groups evaluated excellent at International level.
Living on and off campus
A varied cultural programme characterizes life on campus, from concerts, to actors performances, to exhibitions. International students are particularly entitled to discounts in theatres and museums, and special initiatives are organized for them.
Milan is always open to cultural and economic innovation coming from abroad, as demonstrated by the many tradeshows and events that animate the city all year long, like the International Furniture Show and the Fashion Week.
Moreover in view of Expo 2015, Milan is transforming and renewing its profile in an atmosphere of vibrant activities and expectation, and it is a perfect location to start from for visiting Italy: cities like Venice, Verona and Florence are within easy reach.
